Join the Masterclass this Saturday and begin to perfect your rhythm guitar skills.

Western swing music is a huge part of America's musical history. It's the south's interpretation of Big Band Swing music. Springing out of north Texas and Oklahoma Western Swing incorporates elements of Appalachian music, Swing and Blues. 

There are defined eras of Western Swing music over the years and different approaches to playing rhythm. We'll be focusing in on the music of Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys

I'll be showing you three different approaches to the western swing standard Roly Poly. Each one will build of the last.

This means that this masterclass has something to offer guitarists no matter where you're at. 

➡️ First, we'll start with a simple approach by playing root position swing chords and focusing on the feel, tone and song form. This is great for you newbies to the style.

➡️ Next, I'll show you how to add chord inversions using swing chord voicings to create more melodic basslines, harmonic movement and dynamics. This will get us into Bob Wills and Eldon Shamblin territory. Eldon Shamblin was Bob Wills rhythm guitarist who pioneered a unique style of playing rhythm. This will be more of a challenge considering we'll be changing chords every two beats. 

➡️ Finally, we'll look at a more advanced way to play these changes by adding new inversions, superimposing chords, adding walking chords, adding ii-Vs and chromatic connections between chords. This will give you a whole new respect for western swing rhythm. At this level we can be very creative with our choices.
